Hye-Rim Ma was born in South Korea in 1985 and received her first piano lessons at the age of four.
From 2000 to 2002, she attended Busan High School of Arts, where she was taught by Yoon-Ha Hwang and Prof. Choong-Mo Kang. From 2003, she began her studies as a scholarship student at Yonsei University with Prof. Geum-Bong Kim and Su-Hee Eu, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in February 2007 with excellent results.
She then continued her further studies with Prof. Michael Hauber at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Mannheim, graduating in 2009 with a diploma in "Artistic Training"; in 2013 she completed the postgraduate studies in "Soloistic Training". She is currently studying "Chamber Music for Pianists" as an additional course.
In addition to her studies, Hye-Rim attended master classes with Bernd Goetzke, Wladimir Krajnew, Bruno Rigutto and Wolfgang Watzinger.
Between 1996 and 2012 she won various prizes at competitions in Korea (Eum-Yeon Competition, Kyung-Sung University Music Competition, Eumkyo Competition, Korea Piano Duo Competition), in Italy (Concorso Musicale "Citta di Lissone"), and at the 6th International Summer Academy Schloss Heiligenberg.
From 2011 to 2012, Hye-Rim was a scholarship holder of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
She also performs as a soloist and chamber musician: among other things, she played as a soloist with the Kurpfälzisches Kammerorchester as part of the Mozart Gala in November 2010, and in January 2013 with the orchestra of the Baden-Baden Philharmonic.
